Public discussion around lambratzies has returned, with safety now at the center rather than the tradition itself. After a meeting with Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris, Union of Municipalities president Andreas Vyras said the issue is not the custom, but the delinquent behavior that has accompanied it in recent years.
According to the Union, concerns begin weeks before Easter, when the collection of materials in neighborhoods and municipalities can take dangerous forms. Officials stress that the problem is not limited to Holy Saturday night, but develops gradually from the period after Christmas.
Vyras called for close coordination between Police, Fire Service and local authorities to prevent incidents and public nuisance. The Union of Municipalities is urging all relevant bodies to act early in order to protect citizens and preserve social cohesion during the festive period.
