With cheers and hugs, Larnaca has just been named the European Capital of Culture for 2030.
The announcement was streamed live on YouTube and the social media pages of the Deputy Ministry of Culture:
This title ends the wait for two cities and their teams that took part in the process. As the countdown started, both teams felt hopeful yet tired, believing they gave their all in this tough competition.
The Committee of Experts visited both cities, with Larnaca on Monday and Limassol on Tuesday. On Wednesday, ten-member teams from each city shared their detailed plans. A month ago, the 12-member committee received the final proposals from both candidate cities. Larnaca and Limassol were chosen as Cyprus’s top candidates last February.
The European Commission gives each European Capital of Culture the Melina Mercouri Prize, worth €1.5 million, funded by the “Creative Europe” program, to honor the quality of their preparation.
