Fact-checking the video alleging campaign funding and Presidential access issues.

As the leaked video circulating on platform X continues to dominate political discourse in Cyprus, authorities, political parties, and the public face a mix of confirmed facts, disputed interpretations, and serious unanswered questions.

The footage, published by the account @EmilyTanalyst under the name Emily Thompson, includes secretly recorded conversations with individuals closely linked to the presidential environment. Although its release has triggered investigations and political reactions, the material itself remains fragmented.

Here is a clear record of what has been confirmed so far — and what remains unclear.

What We Know

1. The footage is authentic The video is real and not produced with artificial intelligence. The individuals appearing in it indeed had the recorded conversations with the person who used a hidden camera.

2. The video is heavily edited The final eight-minute clip appears to be a product of extensive editing, combining snippets from different meetings and various people. It does not depict a single or chronologically continuous discussion.

3. Multiple meetings occurred Footage recorded at different locations shows that more than one meeting took place, either on the same day or on different days, particularly involving former Energy Minister George Lakkotrypis.

4. Identity link with the account that published the video A source speaking anonymously to FastForward confirmed that the X user @EmilyTanalyst, operating under the name Emily Thompson, is the same person who authored two articles in Eurasia Review, two articles in The American Spectator, and many articles in The Thinking Conservative. This confirms identity linkage but not motives or funding.

5. Previously unknown proximity to Presidential Office The video reveals a previously unknown level of informal proximity between George Lakkotrypis and the presidential environment. Although he holds no official institutional role, the Director of the Presidential Office is heard stating that “George advises the President a lot.”

Claims made by participants in the video that are yet to be verified

1. Business circles’ access to presidential environment As presented in the material, top business executives describe frequent and direct contact with the presidential environment, reinforcing an image of informal access to decision-makers.

2. Flexibility in campaign spending limits Participants in the video imply that the legal limit of 1 million euros for presidential campaigns is “flexible” and allegedly not strictly adhered to in practice.

3. Use of cash to bypass funding limits The video mentions using cash as a means to exceed official spending limits without these expenses appearing in official records.

4. Influence claims related to sanctions and donations George Lakkotrypis is heard claiming he uses his influence with the President to help individuals avoid sanctions and facilitate donations. These statements reflect his own claims and have not been independently verified.

5. Donations as leverage According to what is stated in the video, private donations are presented by participants as sufficient to “capture the Presidency’s attention,” allowing them, according to their claims, to advance private interests. These references are their own claims.

What We Don’t Know

1. What material was excluded from final editing There is no insight into which parts of recorded conversations were removed, what was the original sequence of statements, or whether editing altered the overall meaning of exchanges.

2. Who funded or commissioned recordings It remains unknown if the endeavor was funded by the publisher themselves or conducted on behalf of a third party, domestic or foreign.

3. If media outlets were approached before publication It has not been confirmed if traditional media were offered the material before its publication on social media or if any refused to publish it.

4. If content constitutes criminal offenses Despite the seriousness of allegations, it has not been determined if recorded statements — even fragmentarily — meet legal thresholds for criminal acts under Cypriot law.

5. If publisher’s presentation context is accurate The claim accompanying the video — “I can’t even describe what I just received!” — has not been independently verified, leaving open questions about how and when the material was obtained.

Who is “Emily Thompson,” account on X behind government-shaking video?

“Emily Thompson” is the name used by the X account @EmilyTanalyst, which published the video containing allegations of campaign finance irregularities purportedly involving the Nikos Christodoulides government, causing widespread political turmoil in Cyprus.

The UK-based account was created in July 2022 and describes its administrator as an “independent researcher, analyst, and lecturer,” focusing primarily on US domestic and foreign policy. Until early January 2026, it had a relatively limited number of followers, just a few hundred users, and was not previously known in the Cypriot public sphere.

An examination of the X account’s activity by FastForward shows that in the months leading up to the video’s release, @EmilyTanalyst was mainly engaged in reposting and commenting on developments in American politics, such as elections, Congressional activities, and internal political disputes. The account also frequently shared analyses on international affairs, particularly regarding European security, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and broader geopolitical developments.

In the days prior to the video’s release, the account had posted comments about Cyprus as well, including posts regarding the country’s assumption of the EU Council Presidency, as well as political developments surrounding reunification efforts.

Today, @EmilyTanalyst published what it described as a “bombshell”: a hidden camera video, claiming to have received it from an unnamed source.

Beyond social media, articles bearing the byline “Emily Thompson” have been published on analysis platforms, including the Eurasia Review, where the author is described as an independent geopolitical researcher and private consultant. The same “Emily Thompson” has published two articles in The American Spectator and multiple articles in The Thinking Conservative.

FastForward’s investigation confirms that the “Emily Thompson” bylining these articles is the same person managing the @EmilyTanalyst account on X. However, it remains unclear whether the aforementioned publications conducted background checks or identity verification to confirm the real identity of the individual writing the articles and managing the X account.

No publicly available information confirms the identity, institutional affiliation, or professional background of the person behind this specific account.
