The mild winter in Cyprus continues, with some areas seeing cold and snow. But spring is on its way, even if it feels far off. Now is the perfect time to learn about the flowers that will bloom soon in Cypriot nature.
A lovely and subtle wildflower that stands out is the narrow-leaved lupine (Lupinus angustifolius). It grows naturally in Cyprus and is part of the Leguminosae family.
This annual plant is elegant yet resilient. It can grow up to 50 centimeters tall, but usually stays around 35–40 cm. Its leaves are palmate, divided into 5 to 6 slender leaflets, giving it a light look.
It blooms in spring, from April to May, mainly in semi-mountainous and mountainous areas at altitudes of 600–1,300 meters. You can find it in meadows, uncultivated lands, roadsides, or even riverbeds, adding color to the landscape.
The flowers are small, blue-purple, and dense, forming a striking terminal raceme. Its fruit is a legume, like many plants in its family. In Cyprus, this species mainly grows in the Troodos mountain range, where it thrives best.
Another related species, Lupinus micranthus, also grows on our island, adding to the variety of lupines in Cypriot flora.
The beautiful lupine, with its subtle charm and deep blue flowers, is one of the most charming spring sights in Cypriot nature. Each year, as the snow melts and the Troodos mountains ‘wake up,’ it reminds us of nature’s strength and our island’s rich biodiversity.
