Police were called to a residence in Nicosia yesterday afternoon where a 35-year-old man was causing alarm in the neighbourhood.
When officers attempted to detain him, the 35-year-old reacted violently, striking a police officer in the face with his hands. Backup was required before the arrest could be carried out.
At the same time, it was discovered that the man had set fire to the car of a 34-year-old woman — the homeowner. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Service, which was called to the scene.
During questioning, the 35-year-old reportedly admitted to the arson. He was taken into custody, while the injured officer was taken to Nicosia General Hospital, where he received first aid and was discharged.
