Maria Markou, an educator and one of Cyprus’s two international athletes in the Paralympic Games, has received another big honor. She was recognized at the Limassol Municipality’s Ceremony of Excellence for Athletes & Teams for 2025, held at the Pattihio Municipal Theatre.
Maria describes winning the award as more than just happiness. For her, it wasn’t the honor itself that touched her, but the journey to reach it—the tough days, moments of doubt, and the strength to keep going. The award represents not just a medal or plaque, but the result of hard work, discipline, and the belief that every step—big or small—matters.
Her nickname, “Pikkoua”, shows her determination. She says she “goes against” all stereotypes and life’s challenges. With this spirit, she achieves every goal she sets. Maria is ready for 2026 with a clear mind, full heart, new goals, fresh challenges, and dreams she wants to make real.
The ceremony was part of the Lemesia 2025 powered by Bro Brainrocket, and it included representatives from the state, local government, business world, and sports community.
Awards were given for performances, sportsmanship, and international achievements that showcased the energy of Cypriot sports. Among those honored were Pavlos Kontides, Marilena Makri, Karolina Pelendritou, Maria Markou, Viktoras Pentaras, Panagiotis Panayiotou, Nikolas Antoniou, Kalia Antoniou, Marios Georgiou, Alexandros Karaolis, Milan Traikovic, Konstantinos Ioannou, Elena Koulitsenko and Vera Tougouloukova.
