Mayor Yiannis Armeftis underscored the importance of cooperation between local government and the academic community in planning the city’s future, on the occasion of the agreement signed by the Municipality of Limassol with the University of Cyprus.
Mr. Armeftis described the cooperation as being of strategic importance for Limassol, as it lays the foundations for a comprehensive development model that will determine the city’s course for the coming years. The agreement is linked to the broader objective of the “Limassol 2023 – Climate Neutral and Smart by 2030” plan and focuses on planning sustainable mobility, spatial development, and urban upgrading.
For the implementation of the project, the Municipality is investing €1.2 million, while the planning phase will last 42 months. The mayors of the neighboring municipalities in the metropolitan area also emphasized the importance of this cooperation. The Mayor of Amathus, Kyriakos Xydias, pointed out that the greater Limassol area must be treated as a single unified region in order to avoid conflicting development policies.
Similarly, the Mayor of Polemidia, Andros Theodorou, noted that this initiative marks a new era for the region’s urban planning. Professor Loukas Dimitriou mentioned that traffic congestion constitutes a major obstacle to the city’s functioning, adding that the creation of new developmental sub-centers could contribute to decongestion and balanced growth.
The goal, as he stated, is to enhance the city’s international character and transform it into a major cultural and economic hub of the Eastern Mediterranean, likening it to the “Cannes of the region.”
