Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris revealed to the parliamentary Human Rights Committee the location for Cyprus’s new correctional facility. The new complex will be erected in Mathiati, on a large, isolated site with capacity for up to 1,500 convicted inmates.
The project cost is estimated at 300 million euros, a figure reflecting the ambition to provide modern, humane detention conditions. The Minister noted that the Mathiati community has raised no objection following the project’s presentation.
A key detail: pre-trial detainees will not be transferred to the new facility. They will continue to be held in 2-3 wings of existing installations near the courts to facilitate transport. Currently, of the roughly 1,160 inmates, about one-third are pre-trial detainees.
Additionally, Minister Fytiris announced that the juvenile detention facility in Limnes will be completed by late April, after which minor inmates will be transferred to Mennogeia.
