The case began around midday on Tuesday in Nicosia district, when traffic police officers from headquarters stopped a car driven by a 29-year-old man. According to police, the driver was asked to take a drug test but refused.
During the search that followed, officers found a small bag containing about two grams of cannabis in the passenger glove compartment. When traffic police moved to arrest him for the on-the-spot offence of illegal drug possession, the 29-year-old allegedly pushed two officers and ran to avoid arrest.
A chase followed, during which warning shots were fired into the air. Police say that while trying to escape, the suspect threw several objects to the ground. After his arrest, those items were checked and were found to be four bags of cocaine with a total gross weight of 30 grams.
In a later search by YKAN officers in the suspect’s vehicle, police also found and seized five mobile phones, five bags containing cannabis with a total gross weight of 30 grams, and €4,770 in cash. The 29-year-old was arrested for a flagrant offence and is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court for a remand order, while YKAN Nicosia continues the investigation.
