After nine years of absence, former Limassol Mayor Nikos Nikolaidis has returned to the ranks of EDEK, in a move that brings a wave of optimism to the party ahead of parliamentary elections.
EDEK President Nikos Anastasiou announced Nikolaidis’s “repatriation,” noting that he, “sensing the critical nature of the times and the difficult battle EDEK is waging, rallies alongside the leadership and the party’s supporters.” Anastasiou stressed that the mobilisation of party cadres is an essential prerequisite “for EDEK to remain a strong bastion of resistance.”
According to reports, Nikolaidis made clear that he does not seek any party office nor does he intend to run as a parliamentary candidate. His position is unequivocal: it is the new generation’s turn to take the lead.
Nikolaidis himself confessed that “nine years passed away from EDEK — not by my own will.” He emphasised that ties with the party base were never severed, and declared that “Cyprus, more than ever, needs EDEK today” — a party capable of “putting a stop to corruption and impunity.”
