Nikos Sykas is appealing to the Supreme Court against DISY’s decision to exclude him from the parliamentary election ballot. He argues that the process violated fundamental principles of justice and the presumption of innocence.

The MP has tasked his lawyer, Christos Pourgourides, with thoroughly examining the legal grounds for an appeal and determining the next steps. Speaking on the TV show Alpha Kalimera, Mr. Pourgourides emphasized that the decision was made without giving Nikos Sykas a chance to be heard. “You cannot make a decision about someone without giving them the opportunity to defend themselves,” he noted, adding that many complaints eventually prove unfounded, making the party’s hasty decision even more problematic.

The lawyer stressed that the Supreme Court has not yet examined evidence that could substantiate a prima facie case, but instead focused on whether the police should be allowed to investigate the complaint. He also described as “ridiculous” the argument that lifting immunity would justify exclusion and called the party’s decision “devastating” for him.

The appeal to the Supreme Court is expected to review both the procedure and legality of DISY’s decision, allowing for an evaluation of facts based on law and fundamental principles of justice. Nikos Sykas categorically denies allegations of assault and insulting his partner.
