When players leave a team’s academy, it’s always a tricky situation. It’s not just about filling spots on the field; it’s also about keeping the bond between fans and the club strong. Omonia faced this challenge over the past year.
Three Cypriot players, who grew up at “Ilias Poullos” and were vital to the team, have moved on. Andronikos Kakoullis was sold for 1 million euros, Hambos Charalambous left for about 425,000 euros, and Loizos Loizou brought in 1.2 million euros for the club. These players were reliable, had important roles, and contributed greatly to Omonia’s success.

Instead of quick fixes and pricey signings, Omonia decided to trust its own talent. Angelos Neophytou, only 20 years old, stepped up as the main Cypriot striker. Nineteen-year-old Panagiotis Andreou moved into midfield, taking over Hambos’ responsibilities. On the wings, Angelos Andreou joined as a free agent and has quickly shown he can deliver.
It’s clear that experience and game maturity can’t be replaced overnight. They come from playing time, pressure, and learning from mistakes. But the key is in the philosophy: Henning Berg gave space and time, and Omonia, having earned around 2.5 million euros from player sales, found solutions that fit their “DNA” at a low cost.
In a time when many see progress only through transfer fees, Omonia shows it can grow without losing its roots. It says goodbye to players but keeps its philosophy intact. And it invests in today while protecting its future.
