The rules for dealing with dangerous drivers are changing. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis is transferring powers to the Police Chief, enabling officers to revoke licences on the spot.

The measure targets drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Previously, the Road Transport Department sent registered letters most offenders ignored.

Now the licence is suspended on the spot with a referral to a medical board.

The department also warned about vehicles with electric flush door handles — passengers can become trapped if power fails after a crash.

The deadline for renewing vehicle registrations without penalty is 11 March. So far 677,133 vehicles renewed.
