With massive attendance and a genuinely festive atmosphere, Clean Monday was celebrated across the wider Paphos district, marking the start of Great Lent. From the Lighthouse to Geroskipou, Agios Georgios Pegeia and Latsi, thousands gathered by the sea to honour the traditional customs of the day.
Lagana flatbread, taramosalata, olives, halva, fasolada and foukudes adorned the Lenten tables, while the spring-like weather — sunny with mild temperatures — encouraged a mass outing to the countryside. Colourful kites, both handmade and store-bought, filled the sky, reviving one of the day’s most cherished traditions.
At Geroskipou Municipal Beach, the Municipality of Ierokipias set up tables and chairs along the shore for visitors’ convenience and offered free loukoumades. Mayor Nikos Palios noted that the fine weather created the ideal setting for a safe family outing.
In Konia, festivities included free kites, lagana and drinks, along with an inflatable playground for children. In Polis Chrysochous, the programme was enriched with music, dance groups and complimentary fasolada, while Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou stressed the importance of respecting the natural environment.
Acting Paphos Mayor Angelos Onisiforou urged citizens to enjoy their outings responsibly, reminding them that protecting nature is a collective duty.
