AGIOS TRIMITHIAS PRIMARY SCHOOL: After the earthquake drill… they experienced reality – The importance of prevention for all ages
At Agios Trimithias Primary School, a scheduled earthquake drill took place the day before yesterday, demonstrating in practice how critical training and preparedness are for natural disasters. Shortly thereafter, reality confirmed the value of the drill, as an actual earthquake occurred.
According to a statement from the school’s Parents’ Association, “Our children, along with all the staff, reacted calmly and promptly, applying what they learned during the drill and ensuring everyone’s safety.”
Drills in the educational setting are essential; they represent a vital safety process, crucial for both students and educational support staff. Effective preparation requires a comprehensive plan that must include drills, information dissemination, repeated practice, infrastructure assessment, evacuation/alarm procedures, and communication with parents and the broader school community. Unfortunately, we learned that there were high school students whose teachers did not even bother to evacuate them from the classroom, continuing with the lesson as usual.
So, at what magnitude on the Richter scale do they leave the classroom, and who is responsible for informing them?
All ages must actively participate because the correct response to an earthquake does not depend solely on age, but also on the coordinated implementation of procedures. With proper guidance, children can become real safety levers for themselves and those around them. The collaboration of parents, school communities, and parent associations is crucial. The example set by the Parents’ Association of Agios Trimithias Primary School illustrates the value of organized action; through their efforts, a drill was conducted, information was shared, and participation was ensured, securing everyone’s safety.
At the same time, continuous upgrades to school infrastructure must accompany drills. It is not enough for students and teachers to know routine drills; appropriate infrastructures are also necessary, especially in a country like Cyprus, which is located in a seismic zone. The experience of Agios Trimithias Primary School serves as a model to emulate; education in prevention and organized action saves lives and enhances everyone’s safety. Every school, for all ages, must have a well-planned preparedness strategy, repeated drills, and collaboration with families and communities.
