Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos has put forward a new proposal to the Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou for opening a crossing point in Kaimakli. The alternative emerged after the initiative to open the Mia Milia checkpoint ran into obstacles.
Specifically, the proposal involves a passage on Agiou Ilarionos Street in Kaimakli, which would allow vehicle traffic. Prountzos clarified that the solution is technically feasible while stressing that the goal of opening Mia Milia and the Athienou-Pyroi-Aglantzia route remains on the table.
The objective is clear: to relieve pressure on the Agios Dometios checkpoint, which bears the heaviest load. Currently only three of seven control booths are operational, and they are not always staffed, causing massive delays affecting thousands of citizens.
The situation is further compounded by stricter per-vehicle checks introduced as part of compliance measures for Cyprus’s full Schengen accession. Prountzos’s proposal is based on discussions he held over the past year with the “mayor” of occupied Nicosia, Mehmet Harmancı.
