There are big worries about road traffic accidents in Cyprus. Fatal accidents are increasing, even with new safety measures. In 2025, there were 45 fatal accidents, showing how hard it is to fix this issue.
At the same time, many traffic cases are piling up in courts. Data shared with Parliament by MP Nikos Georgiou shows that from 2020 to 2024, 134,000 traffic cases were filed across the country. This number doesn’t include violations settled out of court or through cameras.
The former Minister of Justice said that Prosecutor’s Offices receive cases daily and in large numbers. Most of these are about traffic violations and photo enforcement cases, which number in the thousands.
There’s also concern about how well summonses are delivered. Nationwide, the delivery rate is just 51.4%, with big differences between districts. According to the police, most undelivered summonses relate to traffic cases, especially those involving foreign defendants or outdated address details.
Mr. Charchiotis pointed out that some traffic offenses can be dismissed if not filed within certain time limits. This adds to the complicated issues of road safety and justice.
