The government is launching a new feature for quick alerts to citizens during emergencies using the SafeCY app.
This service was announced on Wednesday by Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou and Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy Filippos Chatzizacharias. They also shared an informational video on how to install and use the app.
Mr. Ioannou mentioned that the upgraded app will send alerts to users who have it on their phones in case of a security issue. These alerts will be based on users’ real locations within a certain area around the incident.
This feature aims to provide timely information to citizens and improve on SMS alerts, which depend on registered addresses instead of current locations.
While the service does not help those without smartphones or who haven’t installed the app, it is seen as an important tool until the national Early Warning System is fully in place.
This initiative is part of a larger plan to modernize civil defense, focusing on better protecting citizens and managing emergencies more effectively.
