Agios Spyridonas High School in Kato Polemidia is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. They are launching ‘Cultural Nights’, a series of events highlighting culture through arts and literature.
The event starts with ‘Cinema at School – Movie Night’ in the school’s Screening Room on Friday, February 6th at 8:00 PM. Admission is free for everyone. The Central Student Council organized this event with help from two cultural groups: Limassol Film Club and Queer Wave.
The Spanish film Deaf (Sorda) by Eva Libertad will be shown with Greek subtitles. It won the Audience Award at the Berlin Festival 2025 and is nominated for the pan-European LUX Audience Award 2026. This touching film tells the story of a deaf woman navigating motherhood among hearing people, raising awareness about empathy and inclusion. Film expert Diego Armando Aparicio will introduce the film. He represents Cyprus this year in the Young Talent Programme of the LUX Award. After the screening, there will be a relaxed discussion with the audience.
This initiative also aims to raise funds for the Welfare Fund through voluntary donations from attendees. Popcorn, snacks, soft drinks, and juices will be available, thanks to support from the school’s Parent-Teacher Association.
Agios Spyridonas High School joined the Pilot Unified Schools Program this year. Its goal is to create an accepting and engaging environment for all students, no matter their unique circumstances.
The LUX Audience Award is given each year by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, along with the Media strand of the Creative Europe program and the Europa Cinemas network. This award shows the European Parliament’s commitment to culture and education, supporting European cinema and promoting cultural diversity. Viewers can rate the five nominated films online, entering a draw to attend the LUX Award ceremony in April in Brussels.
