Recently, media reports and social media posts have highlighted a case about a big debt owed to the Strovolos Municipality. This debt, from a local businessman, is over two million euros.
The Strovolos Municipality released an official statement, explaining that the Municipal Council discussed this issue on October 8, 2024, and in later administrative meetings. The current Mayor learned about this right after taking office and informed the Council members, who were hearing about it for the first time.
In simple terms, the municipality’s money is for its citizens. It is not given away.
According to reports, the new Municipal Council discovered that even though there were talks and agreements between the businessman and the former Mayor — without the old Municipal Council’s approval — the total debt actually grew instead of shrinking.
The current Municipal Council stresses that it is taking all necessary steps to collect the money owed to the Municipality. They also point out that the current Mayor and Municipal Council are working together, with full transparency, to protect the interests of Strovolos citizens — a commitment they plan to keep strong.
