The high-profile dispute between MP Nikos Sykas and the Democratic Rally (DISY) came before the Limassol District Court today, with the judge reserving a decision expected before Saturday.
At issue is an interim injunction: Sykas is seeking to block the party’s Supreme Council from reviewing a Political Bureau decision that removed him from the parliamentary election ballot.
His lawyer, Christos Pourgouridis, argued forcefully that Sykas’s inclusion on the ballot resulted from an electoral process and that no collective body has the right to overturn election outcomes. He pointed out that on 13 October 2025 the Political Bureau itself had ratified the ballot.
According to Pourgouridis, oversight of candidate conduct falls under the Ethics Committee of DISY per Article 51 of the charter, making the Political Bureau’s involvement ‘unconstitutional’. He called the opposing side’s claim that no explicit provision exists ‘an invention’.
The court clarified that its role is strictly to interpret the charter, with no power to ‘choose the ballot’. DISY’s side considers this a purely political decision, maintaining that the Supreme Council has exclusive authority over the ballot.
