The program Syros Cats, a non-profit initiative relying solely on volunteerism, has managed to create a model care network for stray cats across the island, offering food, medical care, and safety to animals that would otherwise be exposed.
The team behind Syros Cats organizes daily activities including feeding, cleaning, rescues, neutering, and adoptions, giving cats a second chance and contributing to the balance of the local ecosystem. Every year, dozens of volunteers from all over Greece arrive in Syros to participate in the program, with the team offering free or low-cost accommodation in shared hostels, fully equipped with private rooms, kitchen, bathroom, and breakfast.
Volunteers at Syros Cats participate daily in basic needs of the shelter, taking on feeding and caring for cats, cleaning spaces and cages, supporting sick or fearful animals, and general tasks that keep the structure operational. Despite the recognition and success it has gained, the program operates with limited resources, relying mainly on donations and contributions.
