The teachers’ strike on Thursday, ending at 9:00 AM, is upsetting many parents. This timing causes big transportation problems for students, as parents will need to drop off their kids later than usual.
Latest updates say that students who can’t get to school won’t be marked absent. However, teachers on strike may face pay cuts.
There were talks about holding back first semester reports from students, but this plan was dropped. On the show Alpha Good Morning, Loizos Constantinou, president of the Cyprus Confederation of Secondary Education Parents, shared parents’ strong frustration with the situation.
“Advocating for your job is one thing, but impacting the rights of others, like children and parents, is another,” he said, pointing out that around 310,000 parents and students are affected. He added, “At 9:00 AM, nearly one-third of the population will be on the streets just to take kids to school.”
Mr. Constantinou also noted that they are in touch with the Ministry of Education to make necessary plans since school buses can’t change their routes.
“Especially from remote areas, we will ensure no absences are recorded. Neither kids nor parents are to blame,” he stressed, adding that the Ministry will likely make an announcement soon.
