TEACHERS STRIKE: Chaos for 96,000 Parents – Protest Against New Evaluation Plan
The Ministry of Education is urging the 96,000 parents of secondary school students to drop off their children at schools after 11:00 a.m., following the end of the teachers’ work stoppage organized by OELMEK, who are protesting against the new teacher evaluation bill.
The Pancyprian Confederation of Parent Associations (P.S.O.G.) is strongly reacting, emphasizing that transporting students under these circumstances is practically impossible, as approximately 55% rely on school buses. Parents stress that the presence of a small group of students after the strike “serves no educational purpose” and creates issues of dysfunction and unequal treatment.
Teachers are going on strike to protest the Teacher Evaluation Plan, which they believe does not meet the actual pedagogical needs of schools, unjustifiably burdens the state, and ignores the deficiencies of public education. Through their work stoppage (7:30–11:00 a.m.) and participation in a protest outside Parliament, teachers are demanding a modern, functional, and pedagogically valid evaluation framework, with genuine dialogue and solutions that will support public schools and children. The Confederation is asking the Ministry to allow students to refrain from attending for the entire day, in order to avoid inconvenience for families and ensure the smooth operation of schools.
