An alarming escalation of violence against educators has been recorded in secondary schools across Limassol and Larnaca, prompting OELMEK to issue a stern statement and demand immediate action.
According to the union, teachers have been subjected to verbal abuse, serious threats, attempted physical assault and property damage by parents and students within school premises.
A recent incident in Limassol stands out: a parent entered a school, hurled insults and serious threats at a teacher and attempted a physical assault. Similarly troubling cases were reported in Larnaca schools.
OELMEK is demanding that the Ministry of Education and the police take all necessary protective measures. It also insists on the creation of clear, binding protocols for handling incidents of violence against teaching staff by parents or third parties.
The string of incidents highlights a growing problem that threatens both the safety of educators and the functioning of schools as secure learning environments.
