The Paphos Municipal Council meeting, which was postponed last week, started today behind closed doors. The session didn’t finish because many councilors were missing, and the AKEL Municipal Group left, causing another delay.
Only 15 out of 25 members showed up for the meeting, while several had already asked for a written postponement. Today’s session had notable absences, including Vice Mayor Angelos Onisiforou, four members from the DIKO group, two from EDEK, one of the two DIKO members, the ELAM councilor, and the councilor from the “Human City” coalition.
AKEL pointed out that because of investigations into serious claims against Mayor Faidonas Faidonos, it was important to postpone or for the Mayor to step aside from today’s session until the Ministry of Interior decides on a possible suspension.
The group emphasized that their departure does not go against the presumption of innocence, but is a move of institutional responsibility and political seriousness aimed at protecting the dignity of the Municipal Council and democratic institutions.
