Historical Roots of Centuries
Tradition says that Saint Helena founded a small church here during her visit to Cyprus in the 4th century AD. She also established the historic Stavrovouni, adding to the area’s spiritual significance.
The first written mentions of the monastery date back to the early 19th century. At that time, it was a male monastery with five monks from Mosfiloti and Psevdas.
From Dissolution to Contribution
After the tragic events of 1821, the monastery was closed. But it never lost its social mission. After Turkish rule ended, it became a Greek school, educating about fifty children from six nearby villages until 1914 — a big step for education and national awareness in the area.

In 1965, Old Calendarist monks came to the monastery and stayed until 1979. Then, history came alive again.
On November 9, 1991, the monastery reopened as a female monastery. From then on, Saint Thekla became a key place for thousands of believers.
