Yet another fatal incident has occurred in the waters surrounding the historic Zenobia shipwreck, leaving behind grief and unanswered questions. Sixty-seven-year-old Giorgos Nikolaou, a resident of Paralimni, found himself in distress during a dive and was ultimately pulled from the water without vital signs — a Saturday morning that began with promise ended in mourning.
The distress signal came at 09:40, when the Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Centre received word that a diver was in trouble near the wreck site. A Maritime Police speedboat and an OKYpY ambulance were immediately dispatched.
The diver was brought aboard the patrol boat and rushed to Larnaca General Hospital, where his death was regrettably confirmed. The Larnaca Police Directorate has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy.
