Turkey’s Disinformation Combat Centre (DMM) has categorically denied social media claims that missiles were launched from a submarine off the Karpasia peninsula.
A video that spread rapidly through Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot media appeared to show missile launches near the peninsula’s coast. Turkish accounts on X claimed that “off Karpasia, several missiles were launched from a submarine within territorial waters,” with the footage allegedly filmed by a fisherman.
However, according to the DMM, the posts are “disinformation.” After reviewing the disputed footage, it was determined that the launches took place in international waters — not in Turkey’s territorial waters nor in those of the occupied territories.
Turkish military sources, cited by the Turkish-Cypriot website Kipris Postasi, confirmed that the activities of a “floating vessel” occurred “in international waters outside territorial waters.”
The DMM urged the public not to give credence to unfounded posts aimed at manipulating public opinion, and to rely solely on official statements.
