An incredible incident took place in the early hours of Monday in Aradippou. An unknown individual entered a police van parked at the SOPAZ area, where a foot-and-mouth disease checkpoint was operating, and drove off.
The officer responsible for the vehicle had briefly stepped away. Upon realising what had happened, he gave chase in a private car in a scene straight out of a film. He managed to block the suspect at a dead-end and recover the police vehicle, near the McDonald’s on Stratigos Timayia road.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident. The event raises questions about security measures at FMD checkpoints, which have been operating across the country for weeks.
