Five trade unions at Cyta issued a joint statement expressing full support for the Finance Ministry’s bill to modernize the organisation’s regulatory framework, ahead of a parliamentary debate scheduled for 2 March.
The unions EPOET, ASET-CYTA, PASE-ATHK, SIDIKEK-CYTA, and SEP-ATHK stress that Cyprus deserves a public body that evolves, competes on equal terms, and delivers measurable benefits to society. They note that across Europe, the telecommunications, energy, and technology sectors are converging into a single strategic ecosystem.
Particular emphasis is placed on Cyta’s intention to offer renewable energy to groups currently without access — young couples, tenants, apartment dwellers, the elderly with limited means, and small businesses unable to install their own photovoltaic systems. Cyta, the unions stress, does not seek to replace other providers but to fill existing market gaps.
At the same time, they warn that rejecting the bill would preserve an outdated framework, preventing the organisation from competing on equal terms. “In an open market, when there is a gap, someone will fill it,” they note, urging Parliament to back the reform for the benefit of society.
Cyta, they underline, has remained profitable for decades, reinvesting its earnings in infrastructure, and has earned international distinctions for technological excellence and service quality.
