A low-pressure system and stronger winds are impacting the area. This weather is likely to last until Thursday, causing unstable conditions across the island.
Today, expect mostly cloudy skies with rain and some thunderstorms, which could be intense. Hail may occur during storms, and snow or sleet is possible on the higher peaks of Troodos. Winds will mainly come from the southwest, blowing strong to very strong at 5 to 6 Beaufort, reaching up to 7 Beaufort along the coasts. The sea will be rough to very rough. Temperatures will rise to about 16 degrees inland, 18 degrees on the coasts, and 4 degrees in the higher mountains.
Tonight, the weather will stay mostly cloudy with local showers and isolated thunderstorms, especially in the western and northern areas. Hail is again expected during storms, with snow or sleet in the higher mountains. Winds will shift to southwest and northwest, blowing moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, with temporary strengthening along the western coasts. The sea will remain rough and locally very rough. Temperatures will drop to 8 degrees inland and on the southern and eastern coasts, 13 degrees on the western and northern coasts, and 2 degrees in the higher mountains, where frost may form.
On New Year’s Day, expect mainly cloudy weather with some isolated showers affecting mostly the western half of the island until early afternoon. Snow or sleet is likely in the higher parts of Troodos and locally in mountainous areas. On Friday and Saturday, there will be more clouds at times.
The temperature on Thursday is not expected to change much. On Friday, it will drop below average values, but an increase is expected again on Saturday.
