Winter Brings Coughs and Colds to Children

We were excited for winter, but it arrived suddenly! With it came viruses and colds that are troubling many families lately.

One of the most common ‘visitors’ has returned to kindergartens and homes: the children’s cough! When the temperature drops and viruses rise, kids often show respiratory symptoms, with coughing being the main issue that bothers everyone.

Coughing as a Natural Reflex of the Body

Pediatrician Dr. Adamos Chatzipanagi from paidiatros.com explains that coughing is a natural reflex of the body. Its job is to protect and clear the airways – the pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs – from irritants.

The breathing pathway, from the nose to the lungs, has a special lining with tiny hairs that act like a filter. They trap dust, germs, and other particles. This lining also has mucus, which helps catch and remove these things from the body.

When a child gets sick, this system of tiny hairs doesn’t work well. More thick mucus is produced, so coughing acts as a ‘cleaner’, getting rid of foreign particles and extra mucus from the airways.

So, coughing isn’t just an annoying symptom; it’s a key defensive reflex ‘weapon’ of the body.

What Should We Do Initially?

  1. Consult the pediatrician!
  2. Don’t give medicine to the child without talking to the pediatrician.
  3. Remember that time is the best ‘treatment’ for a cough.
  4. Avoid smoke at home and in the child’s space.
  5. Give your child plenty of fluids to help thin out phlegm.
  6. Use a cool mist humidifier to keep the air slightly humid.
  7. Avoid too much humidity.

The right care, hydration, and rest help your child recover faster. However, if you have any doubts or if things get worse, consulting a pediatrician is always the best choice!
