After a long break, the Xeros River is flowing again, though not very much. It’s heading towards the Asprokremmos Dam, bringing some hope for water supplies. This was seen on the last day of the year in Nata.
Matthaios Vladimirou, a local tavern owner, captured this moment in video and photos. This comes at a time when Cyprus’s dams are in a tough spot.
The Asprokremmos Dam, the second largest on the island, is still below 10% of its total capacity, like other dams. Since October 1st, total inflows have only reached 260 thousand cubic meters. Experts say this amount will barely increase in the next 24 hours.
Even with these disappointing numbers, the flow in the Xeros River reminds us that every little bit counts. Water sufficiency and good management are key issues for the island this year.
