At the abandoned Nicosia International Airport, a key site in modern Cypriot history, sits a silent symbol of the past. It is the Trident 5B-DAB aircraft from Cyprus Airways, the last of its kind, exposed to the elements since 1974.
Recently, a dedicated effort has started to save and restore this historic aircraft. Alexis Sofokleous, who leads this initiative and is a former Cyprus Airways employee, has prepared a proposal and is seeking support from Embassies and the public through online signatures.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sofokleous has reached out to organizations focused on preserving cultural heritage to protect this important piece of modern history. The Trident was Cyprus’s national carrier for many years when Cyprus Airways connected the island with Europe and the Middle East. After 1974 and the airport’s closure, the aircraft stayed put, becoming a witness to history.
The proposal is ready and will be presented to UNFICYP. It suggests that the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage should provide expertise as an “umbrella” organization. This includes immediate maintenance to prevent corrosion, repainting the aircraft in its original colors, and turning the cabin into a bicommunal exhibition space. The aim is to create a physical and digital “living” museum with historical materials, uniforms, archives, and stories from those who worked at Cyprus Airways.

The plan emphasizes controlled access so students, researchers, and citizens from both communities can visit. The museum will welcome Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, and visitors from around the world. Transportation will be provided by mini-bus while following United Nations safety protocols.
