Cyprus has a troubling title in the European Union: it produces the most food waste per person. Eurostat data shows that in 2021, each European wasted about 131 kilograms of food. Overall, food waste topped 58 million tons. Shockingly, over 54% of this waste comes from private households—meaning more than 31 million tons of food were thrown away in just one year.
Here’s how food waste breaks down in Europe:
- Private households: 54%
- Food and beverage production: 21%
- Primary production: 9%
- Restaurants and catering services: 9%
- Retail and food distributors: 7%
In Cyprus, each person wastes about 400 kilograms of food a year, the highest in the EU. This calls for urgent action.
What is Food Connect?
Food Connect is a smart digital platform that links those with extra food to those who need it. The platform focuses on:
- Donors: businesses, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, farmers, municipalities, and other food industry folks.
- Recipients: social organizations, NGOs, and individuals who are struggling financially.
With easy steps on a friendly and free platform, donors can share their available food while recipients can find food offers nearby.
Pilot Implementation and European Perspective
The Food Connect project is being tested in Cyprus, Malta, and Portugal to improve its features and fit each country’s needs. It also includes campaigns to raise awareness about food waste.
The goal is to build a pan-European network that boosts sustainability, social support, and the circular economy.
Be Part of the Solution
The message is simple: Save food. Cut down on waste.
- If you have food to give away, sign up as a donor.
- If you need help, sign up as a recipient.
