Devlet Bahceli underwent heart surgery – The rumour about the health of the MHP president started spreading yesterday and now it has been confirmed by the party
Turkish President’s partner in government and leader of the ultra-nationalist Nationalist Action Party (NAP), Devlet Bahceli, underwent heart surgery today (Thursday 6/2).
The T24 news website, which is affiliated with the opposition CHP, initially reported that doctors had performed a heart valve replacement, which was later officially confirmed.
A statement from the Nationalist Action Party said, “MHP President Devlet Bahceli was admitted to Anadolu Medical Center Hospital on February 4, 2025 for scheduled examinations and treatments.”
“As a result of the examinations and medical assessments, following the finding of degeneration in the heart valve that had been replaced 10 years ago, the existing valve was interferentially replaced on February 6, 2025 and the procedure was successfully completed without complications.”
“His health condition is extremely good and stable and he is resting in his room. In a short time the hospitalization will be completed and he will return to his daily routine.”
Rumours about Bahceli’s health began to spread yesterday, Wednesday (5/2), with reports that he is being treated for a cardiac problem. Opposition TV station Halk TV had reported that 77-year-old Devlet Bahceli was taken to a hospital on the Asian side of Istanbul after suffering from an ailment stemming from his heart. A day earlier, on Tuesday, the regular meeting of the MHP Parliamentary Group, in which Bahçeli is always the sole speaker, did not take place.
On the other hand, the MHP announced that the postponement of the Parliamentary Group meeting was due to the cough that Bachcheli was suffering from. In fact, pro-government circles claimed that the MHP leader was not facing any health problem and had gone to the hospital for regular health check-ups.
On 22 October last year, the chairman of the Nationalist Action Party, the main political arm of the far-right Grey Wolves, had, to everyone’s surprise, tabled a proposal for the release of the leader of the Kurdish armed group PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, under restrictive conditions, if he publicly renounced armed activity in the National Assembly and called on the members of the PKK to disband the organisation he founded. Ocalan has been imprisoned since 1999 on the prison island of Imrali in the Poropodida, serving a life sentence. The proposal received the support of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and reports suggest that Ocalan is preparing to make a statement on the Kurdish settlement, possibly on February 15, in response to Bahçeli’s initiative.
