The President of the Democratic Rally, Annita Dimitriou, spoke out about a party MP accused of assaulting his partner.
In her post, she doesn’t name the MP but stresses there is zero tolerance for violence. She insists that the investigation should happen right away and be clear. She also believes the MP should voluntarily give up his parliamentary immunity.
The DISY President also shares that the MP is taken off the ballot. This is her suggestion to the party’s decision-makers. She makes it clear that violence—especially against women—goes against the values of the Democratic Rally.
As President of DISY, I want to be very clear: we do not tolerate violence allegations. We respect Justice and the presumption of innocence, but the investigation must be quick and transparent. I believe it’s important for immunity to be voluntarily waived. For now, the MP is off the ballot, and this is my recommendation to the party’s decision-makers. Violence, especially against women, goes against our values. Our principles are non-negotiable.
The MP facing the complaint is Nikos Sykas.
According to reports, the case file will be sent tomorrow, Monday, to the Legal Service, so they can look into the Limassol CID investigators’ request to possibly lift parliamentary immunity. Right now, lifting an MP’s immunity needs a request from the Attorney General to the Supreme Court. Without permission from the Supreme Court, an MP can’t be prosecuted, arrested, or jailed during their term.
