An employee’s firing has caused a big stir. She was let go quickly for telling a customer they parked illegally in a blue space meant for people with disabilities.

In a social media post, the president of the Cyprus Confederation of Disabled Organizations (KYSOA), Themis Anthopoulou, criticized the firing. She says defending blue parking spaces is not rude or unprofessional. It’s a basic act of respect for the law and human dignity.

The company claimed her behavior was “unacceptable and unprofessional,” which has raised concerns among groups and citizens. Complaints suggest the company thought her actions might upset customers, putting their satisfaction above the rights of people with disabilities.

Meanwhile, the president of KYSOA asks a valid question about the company’s logic. If an employee pointed out a customer stealing from the cash register, would that also be called “unprofessional”? Would it be treated the same way?

KYSOA warns that such actions harm corporate social responsibility and send dangerous messages to society, as they make the rights of people with disabilities negotiable based on a customer’s status.

The Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights and groups like the Cyprus Paraplegics Organization (OPAK) have been informed about this case, and it may escalate further.

This case highlights the importance of respecting the rights of people with disabilities. It’s not just about sensitivity or goodwill; it’s an obligation for a fair and modern society. Blue spaces are not a privilege. They are a right.

About the specific incident, the company explains that the employee’s contract was not terminated because of her confrontation with a customer over illegal parking in disabled spaces. They support her intention to defend the rights of individuals with disabilities.

The announcement states that the decision was made due to intense, uncontrolled, and verbally aggressive behavior shown in the department store, which caused disruption.

The announcement reiterates that the decision was due to intense, uncontrolled, and verbally aggressive behavior in the department store, causing disruption. It mentions that this was not a one-time issue, as there had been multiple warnings about unprofessional conduct, even towards coworkers.

It also highlights that the employee was on a probationary period, which factored into the decision. The company wraps up by stating that in an organization with over 200 employees, any inappropriate or verbally violent behavior is unacceptable under any circumstances.
