Today, January 21, we celebrate Global Hug Day. This fun initiative started in 1986 by student Kevin Zaborney. It reminds us of the power of tenderness. A hug is more than just a gesture; it’s a natural ‘medicine’ for our soul and body.

Studies show that even one hug a day can lower stress, boost your immune system, and lift your mood. Psychotherapist Virginia Satir said we need four hugs a day to survive, eight to live well, and twelve to be happy.

The benefits of hugging are backed by science. Kids who got three short hugs daily from their caregivers developed better and were less likely to get sick compared to those who missed out on hugs.

There are at least six types of hugs, each with its own meaning. From the tight ‘bear hug’ that shows love and safety, to the parallel hug that builds trust, the spooning hug for protection, the half-hug that signals distance or insecurity, the romantic hug, and the comforting hug with gentle pats on the back.

Today, let’s make it more than just a celebration. Let’s embrace each other because hugging is key for feeling warmth, connection, and true happiness.
