Workers at Larnaca port went on an unexpected strike this morning. They protested against the bad hygiene conditions that they say threaten their health.
Videos and photos show rats in outdoor areas, sewage, and terrible sanitary facilities. Workers say their health and safety are at risk because needed road repairs haven’t been done.
In a statement, SEGDA-MELIN-PEO and OMEPEGE-SEK said a warning strike started at 7:30 AM today at Larnaca port over safety and health issues by employees of the Larnaca Development Company (formerly KITION OCEAN PORT). “Despite many requests to the Ministry of Transport and ALK, nothing has been fixed. Safety and health issues are very important and cannot be ignored,” it says.

The workers, as mentioned, demand basic needs like clean drinking water, clean sanitary facilities, and safe workspaces without potholes or cables that could harm their safety and health. “As workers and unions, we ask the Ministry of Transport and the Minister to make sure our workplaces are clean and safe so we can work and go home healthy. At the same time, the Ministry of Labor must enforce the Safety and Health Law strictly, no matter the workplace or employer.”
