ON THE STREETS: Students and organizations from all provinces participate in marches and events condemning the pseudo-state
Students from every corner of Cyprus are taking to the streets today, expressing their condemnation of the declaration of the pseudo-state, which occurred on November 15, 1983. After completing their two-hour classes, they headed to the central points of each province to participate in the scheduled gatherings.
The declaration of the pseudo-state was made under the leadership of Rauf Denktaş, who convened the “deputies” on November 14, 1983, to inform them of the intention to declare “independence” the following day. This event marked nine years after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, leaving deep scars in the island’s history.
In Nicosia at 8:30, students from Mammares, Deneia, Kokkino Trimithia, Palaiometocho, and Ayios Trimithias gathered at Mammares Primary School and marched towards the United Nations observation post. The PSEM is organizing an event at 10:30 at the Mia Milia checkpoint, with a gathering at the Wholesale Market in Kaimakli. At the same time, EFEN is starting a march from Eleftheria Square towards the Ledra Palace checkpoint, concluding at the Ledra checkpoint.
In Limassol at 10:00, students from ESEM will gather in the parking area of the Enarios and march towards the Epichosis Theatre (event at 11:00 a.m.). At 10:00 a.m., EFEN begins a march from the EMEL bus parking area towards Old Port Square, via Gladstonos and Independence Streets. In Paphos, students gathered at 9:30 in the parking area of the “Stelios Kyriakidis” stadium while at 10:30 there will be an event condemning the pseudo-state and commemorating the Polytechnic at the memorial of Archbishop Makarios III on Grivas Digenis Avenue.
Demonstrations are also taking place in Larnaca where at 10:30 PSEM gathers at the beginning of Athinon Avenue and marches towards the castle at Finikoudes. The march in Famagusta started at 10:00 from Paralimni High School towards the memorial of Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomou, with a stop at Saint George Square for a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial of Lieutenant General Tasos Markou.
In addition to students, AKEL is organizing an event at Saint Kassianos checkpoint, with a gathering at 6:15 p.m. at the moat of Famagusta Gate.
