Strong reactions filled social media after a comment from MEP Pheidias Panayiotou during a podcast. Many found the comment offensive to people with intellectual disabilities.
This happened while para-swimmer Loizos Chrysanthou was a guest, explaining the categories in the Paralympic Games. When discussing the S14 category, which includes athletes with intellectual disabilities, the MEP made a remark that embarrassed the young athlete.
Mr. Chrysanthou quickly tried to clarify, saying it relates to cognitive difficulties. He mentioned that a Cypriot athlete, who is his close friend, competes in this category. Mr. Panayiotou, realizing his error, attempted to change the topic.
A video clip of the incident is now online and has sparked discussions about language, sensitivity, and respect for people with disabilities.
