A recent inspection found big problems with the condition and accessibility of shelters in Limassol’s center. This was part of a safety check for staff from an organization working in the area.

The investigation noted issues mainly with signs and access. Many shelters were hard to find or reach.

In one case, an apartment building listed as a shelter didn’t seem to have a basement, and there were no signs showing where the shelter was.

In other cases, shelters were in underground parking lots or inside buildings without any public guidance. Some entrances were locked or blocked.

There was also a shelter within a construction site that was fenced off, making it nearly impossible to access.

In another spot used for storage, there was a lot of clutter at the entrance and on the ramp to the basement. This could be dangerous in emergencies.

The report stated that only one of the inspected locations had clear signs and open access for use as a shelter.
