The largest structure in the local Universe, said to be named Kipu after the Inca counting system, has been discovered. Science Alert writes in more detail.
The mass of the superstructure is 200 quadrillion (one with 15 zeros) solar masses. Its length is about 1.3 billion light-years.
Kipu was named due to its resemblance to a long rope with knots, which the Incas used for counting. It is located in the so-called local Universe, that is, relatively close to us in space.
Kipu found during the study of the part of the universe about 130-250 (it is difficult to say more accurately) megaparsecs from us. As the researchers suggest, Kipu (and four other superstructures) contain 45% of galaxy clusters, 30% of galaxies and 25% of the matter of the local Universe.
Such superstructures, according to scientists, are important for understanding the “workings” of the Universe. After all, they hold some of its matter. In addition, superstructures help in studying the evolution of galaxies.
However, Kipu and other massive structures found, probably will not last forever and will disintegrate into pieces.
