Cyprus’ Legal Service announced it will file an appeal against the Nicosia Criminal Court ruling that acquitted Dimitris Syllouris and Christakis Tziovanis in the Al Jazeera case.
At a press briefing, Polina Efthyvoulou said legal errors had been identified in the first-instance judgment and stressed that an appeal is a legitimate procedural right of the prosecution.
She also explained that the disputed video was not submitted as courtroom evidence due to legal restrictions that apply when material is obtained through unlawful recording.
The Legal Service further addressed the absence of key witnesses, outlining repeated contacts, health-related claims, travel abroad, and eventual refusal to testify, including via video link.
Officials said their objective is the proper administration of justice under the law, rather than convictions as an end in themselves.
