If you love hiking and nature, Cyprus has many beautiful trails waiting for you. One of them is the Nature Trail ‘Brothers’. This trail starts in the village of Agia Irini in Nicosia and goes to the Limaria area.
The trail is about 5 kilometers long. It’s perfect for those who want a hike with stunning views and a bit of a challenge. There are some steep uphill sections along the way.
You begin at around 906 meters above sea level and climb up to 1,217 meters at the highest point. The hike takes about two and a half hours. The difficulty level is moderate to demanding, mainly because of the uphill parts.
As you hike, you’ll walk through a beautiful forest filled with rough pine trees. You’ll also enjoy amazing views of the Gulf of Morphou on Cyprus’s northwestern side.
At one spot called Selladi tis Straorouthkias, the trail meets the Kourdali – Limaria path. For about two kilometers, both trails share the same path.
The trail ends in Limaria, a place with historical importance. It has hideouts that were used during EOKA’s national liberation struggle from 1955 to 1959.
Nature and Biodiversity
This route is also great for anyone interested in Cyprus’s plants. During your hike, you might see endemic plants like golden oak (Quercus alnifolia), thyme (known as ‘manouthkia’), and Cypriot skullcap.
The area is rich in wildlife too. You might spot foxes, hares, and hedgehogs. Look up, and you may see birds like the short-toed eagle, forest crow, wild pigeon, and partridge. Endemic species such as the Cypriot warbler and Cypriot wheatear live here as well.
