Nicosia has been named the best cultural destination in Europe for 2026. It took first place in the European Best Destinations (EBD) awards, as announced by the city’s Town Hall.
This honor sets a positive tone for the new year. It shows Nicosia’s growing international presence in culture and highlights it as a rising hospitality spot.
The evaluation came from EBD’s annual process, which mixes expert opinions with public votes. Over 22,000 travelers from 131 countries joined in, giving Nicosia the top score of 18.6 out of 20.
Organizers say the city stood out for its mix of history and modern art, its genuine cultural vibe, and its lively cultural scene. They also highlighted the unique character of Europe’s only divided capital, along with its warm hospitality and Mediterranean charm.
The Municipality of Nicosia stated that this recognition boosts the city’s standing on the European and global cultural map. It confirms their plan for a modern, sustainable capital open to culture. They also thanked everyone who helps shape its cultural identity and promised to keep supporting initiatives that improve culture and quality of life.
The top ten cultural cities in Europe for 2026 also include Florence, Vienna, Leuven, Šibenik, Verona, Tomar, Rouen, Oxford, and Graz.
