Actress Popi Avraam has been named an honorary doctor of the School of Humanities at the University of Cyprus. This honor recognizes her long artistic career and her impact on culture.
The ceremony took place during a special public session, with the Rector, Professor Tasos Christofides, making the proclamation. The Dean of the School, Associate Professor Michalis N. Michael, spoke about the honoree’s work and character. He noted that Popi Avraam promotes universal values through theater, encouraging cooperation and peace between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
He also highlighted her collaboration in 2004 when the Satirical Theater and the Turkish Cypriot Municipal Theater of Nicosia staged Lysistrata, an anti-war play in Turkish. This event showcased theater as a tool for peace and understanding. Since then, Ms. Avraam has continued to work with Turkish Cypriot theater, both in groups and individually.
In her response titled “From Theater to Empathy”, she talked about how theater serves as a space for thought, reflection, and social awareness. She pointed out that the stage is not just for show; it’s a place for creative conflict and personal growth, helping to spark new ideas and questions. The actress also stressed that culture and intellectuals have a duty to fight against intolerance and indifference. She believes true culture is tied to empathy, justice, and human solidarity.
The ceremony wrapped up with the reading of the resolution and the investiture of Popi Avraam in the university gown by the Rector.
The University of Cyprus expressed its appreciation for Popi Avraam’s long-standing contributions to culture and her efforts to promote peaceful coexistence among communities.
