Many parts of Cyprus woke up to rain and thunderstorms on Saturday as a storm front began affecting the island from the early morning hours.

A yellow warning for severe weather is in force from 07:00 on Saturday until 07:00 on Sunday. According to the Meteorological Department, total rainfall during this 24-hour period may locally exceed 55 mm.

The weather system combines prolonged rain, isolated thunderstorms and strengthened north-easterly winds, with gusts in coastal areas expected to reach up to force 7 Beaufort. On the highest peaks of Troodos, sleet or snow is possible.

Police urged drivers to be particularly cautious, keep low speed, maintain safe distances and drive with headlights on.

The forecast indicates that rain and isolated thunderstorms will continue at intervals on Sunday, while Monday and Tuesday are expected to bring periods of increased cloud mainly over mountainous areas.
